Another successful TRANSITION scheme for Torpoint & Rame CATS!

CATS staff have received the following report from Torpoint & Rame CATS following the successful completion of their 2015 TRANSITION Activity Day on 29.05.15 –

We had an extremely successful Year 6 Activity Day, co-ordinated by Karl Curtis of Torpoint YMCA and utilising both the Torpoint and Plymouth YMCA facilities.

A total of 13 children attended from Millbrook, Antony and Carbeile Junior Schools. Everyone of those that took part were a credit to themselves, their parents and their schools. Despite their physical, academic or social skills each one did their best during every part of the timetable and behaved impeccably.

We started the day at Torpoint YMCA where staff coordinated badminton, volleyball, dodge ball, basketball hot seat  and a spell in the gym. The afternoon was spent at the Plymouth YMCA where a session of wall climbing was arranged. Most of the children were extremely nervous and surprised themselves as to how good they were. There was some good humour throughout the day, socialising, team work and a 100% participation rate.

Torpoint & Rame CATS would like to pass on their thanks to all the staff at both the Torpoint & Plymouth YMCAs and especially to Karl for co-ordinating the day for us. Thanks also to Torpoint Community College for the hire of the minibus which made the day so much easier logistically and to Fran Wells for being our driver.

Letters will be drafted to all the parents of those who took part, to pass on the same message and will also include certificates for the young people.

Many thanks also to all the school staff who have supported this Torpoint & Rame CATS activity.

Torpoint & Rame CATS 2015 TRANSITION scheme

Torpoint & Rame CATS are running a NEW Transition scheme in 2015, this follows on from the success of their Table Tennis Transition scheme in 2014.

Torpoint & Rame CATS have/will be inviting specific young people to attend and providing parents/carers with the following information about the day, which will take place on FRIDAY 29th MAY 2015 –

Each year CATS branches aim to organise activities to engage young people in sports that might not be easily accessible to them. There are 5 member schools within the Torpoint & Rame Peninsula and we work hard to raise funds for projects, days out and personal rewards for young people in our community.

Year 6 can be a difficult time for some young people especially when they are preparing to leave small primary schools to start their secondary education. All our member schools recognise that transition activities provide invaluable help and support and make the move less daunting. Torpoint & Rame CATS are very pleased to be able to fund a whole day’s activities for 14 children from the 4 primary schools during the May half term. We hope that all the children will not only enjoy the planned activities but also make new friends, improve social skills and gain confidence.

The following is the timetable for Friday 29th May:

09.30 – 10.00 Pick-ups and travel to Torpoint YMCA

10.00 – 12.00 Sports activities at Torpoint YMCA

12.00 – 12.30 Lunch

12.30 – 13.30 Travel to & arrival at Plymouth YMCA

13.30 – 15.00 Climbing wall activity at Plymouth YMCA

15.00 – 16.00 Return to Torpoint and designated drop-offs

The total cost for the day which includes mini-bus hire, mini-bus driver, Torpoint YMCA & Plymouth YMCA is £265.00, this equates to £18.90 per child. All expenses will be paid in full by Torpoint & Rame CATS.

Parents/carers are required to provide the following:

  • Clothing suitable for taking part in sports activities
  • Hardy training shoes suitable for taking part in sports activities and using the climbing wall
  • Packed lunch
  • Drinks
  • Coat if the weather is bad
  • Medication if required for example; asthma inhalers, travel sickness tablets (all of which must be clearly named and labelled with instructions).

Torpoint & Plymouth YMCA staff are all trained and experienced in coordinating the planned activities. The Driver of the mini-bus will be Mrs Frances Wells, she is a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Carbeile Junior School. Mrs Wells has completed and passed the County approved mini-bus training course on several occasions. Torpoint & Rame CATS are hiring a mini-bus from Torpoint Community College. Tracey Cullerton is the Torpoint & Rame CATS Treasurer, she has been arranging community activities on their behalf for two years. Tracey is also the  administrator at Carbeile Junior School and part of her role includes Health & Safety and Governance.  Mrs Wells and Tracey will be supervising the group throughout the day; additional expertise and supervision will be provided during YMCA activities.

On Sunday 23rd March 2014 a group of 12 Torpoint & Rame CATS’ Community Volunteers (all Torpoint Community College students), together with Committee Members, attended the Torpoint & Rame Penninsula Lions Daffodil Pick in order to support and assist The Lions in their efforts.

The sun was shining and there was lots of enthusiasm, the combined efforts of the CATS Community Volunteers and Lions meant that enough Daffodils were picked within 90 minutes – sales from the previous days’ efforts has already raised over £200 for The Lions and with the sun shining, hopes were high that Sundays’ sales could top this figure!

Excellent work guys, well done to all involved!

Students from Carbeile Junior School are hoping to support this weekends picking activities – lets hope the sun stays with them!

Torpoint & Rame CATS team up with Plymouth Raiders to run a further Basketball Sports Diversionary Scheme in 2014!

After the success of previous schemes, Torpoint & Rame CATS have once again teamed up with Plymouth Raiders Basketball to offer young people in the area the chance to take part in a further CATS Sports Diversionary Scheme. A Taster session took place on 18th March 2014 with young people attending in order to get a taste for the sport and have some fun. The scheme will commence fully on 25th March and will run until 3rd June 2014. Over the 9 weeks the young people will work towards an accredited sporting qualification from England Basketball, whilst also learning valuable life skills such as; team work, communication and commitment. On top of all that, the young people are sure to have lots of fun!

CATS staff are looking forward to attending the session on 6th May to see some of the action in person and to watch the young people show off their new skills!

Torpoint & Rame CATS team up with The Lions!

Torpoint and Rame CATS have recently joined forces with Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Lions Club to launch a student volunteering scheme across Key Stages 2 & 3.

Our thanks go to the Lions for their generosity in providing ‘Community Volunteer’ t-shirts. The blue t-shirts are embroidered with both the Lions and CATs logos.

Our first joint venture is to support the Mothers’ Day Daffodil Pick in March. Volunteers will be helping to pick, bunch and sell flowers to help raise invaluable funds for the Lions. Just another example of the positive community impact a CATS Branch can have on its Community!

OTHER NEWS –

Torpoint CATS make plans for their 2013 Sports Diversionary Scheme

Torpoint CATS are busy planning their Sports Diversionary schemes for 2013. It is looking likely that they will be running a Basketball Sports Diversionary with Plymouth Raiders again, after the success of the 2012 scheme.

Basketball sessions are due to commence on 19th April 2013 – we can’t wait to see the pictures!

Torpoint are also exploring the possibility of a Fishing based Sports Diversionary scheme which sounds very exciting.

Watch this space for further updates!

2012 Sports Diversionary Scheme

Working with Plymouth Raiders, Torpoint & Rame CATS have now completed their first Diversionary Sports Project, made possible with funding from The National Lottery.  Young people were given the opportunity to take part in 8 Basketball coaching sessions at the end of which they achieved a recognised qualification from the British Basket Ball Association.

The success story of the project is that one of the young people who showed considerable talent was invited to join the Academy Programme.  Four other lads were also given the opportunity to take part in a one off  session in Plymouth because they showed commitment and enthusiasm.

Watch this space for 2013 plans!

2012 Awards Evening

The following write up appeared in the June 2012 Torpoint Policing Team Monthly Bulletin –

On Friday 29th June I was fortunate to be invited to a CATS (Community Action Through Sports) awards evening at Torpoint Town Council Hall. The awards were for young people throughout Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula and recognised their achievements. The categories were; for pupils willing to give up their own time helping others in school, fundraising, taking part in or creating projects outside of school and a diversionary project involving training with a Plymouth Raiders Basket Ball coach. 50 young people received awards. On the night they received a certificate and a voucher for one of 14 different sporting activities ranging from a swim, football coaching, sailing to go karting. The hall was packet with family and friends and had standing room only at the start of the evening. We were treated to dancing from a dance group called “20 degrees” from the Torpoint Youth Centre and singing from the Antony Church of England School choir with 2 guest performers from the Military Wives Choir. It was great to feel and see the energy in the room from the young people of our community, well done to them all. This was the first year of the awards, you can find out more by going to www.communityactionthroughsport.org

The below picture was sent to CATS UK by Panny Mather and shows her daughter, Molly, enjoying her reward following the Awards Evening. Molly selected a sailing experience with Cawsand Bay Sailing Club and had a great time!
