Penzance CATS Multi-Sport Diversionary scheme update

Penzance CATS have sent us the following press release about their NEW Multi-Sport Diversionary scheme, together with some amazing pictures of the young participants trying out Gig Rowing at the second session on 22.08.14……….

Representatives from local sports and outdoor recreation business owners; Ocean High, Lands End Cycles, Blue Seas Training CiC; Councillor Cornelius Olivier – Labour St Ives, Police PCSO officer Candice Britten; Scout leader Jeremy Rowe, Heamoor Scouts and sports coaches from local club Pendeen Gig Rowing have combined their skills and talents to create a branch, based in Penzance, of the successful countywide charity CATS (Community Action Through Sport). The branch meets once a month at The Workbox in Penzance to discuss various ways to support young people to engage, in a positive way, with their community, using sport as a means of engagement.

The CATS mission is to promote, recognise and reward young people (aged 5 – 25) for their positive community action. CATS believe that volunteering is the inspiration, recognition is the key and that sport is the driving force!

Penzance CATS launched their first Multi-Sport Diversionary Scheme in August 2014.  The scheme includes giving the young people involved, coached sessions in the following sports;  Kayaking, Gig Rowing, Cycling, and Stand Up Paddleboards. The aim of the scheme is to raise awareness of sports on offer locally and more importantly empower the young people to begin to think about how they can start their own sports group.

‘It’s all about young people becoming more involved in the community and also developing the ability to initiate a project of their own. Kevin Jackson, Chair of Penzance CATS said ‘as adults, we can play our part by enabling and supporting young people through the process, but we need to stop telling them what they want and listen to their ideas. This is what makes CATS so different’

Special thanks to Penwith College for use of the Watersports Centre.
