Falmouth CATS Street Paddler 2013 – Take Two!

Following the success of the first 2013 Street Paddler scheme run by Falmouth CATS in conjunction with Elemental UK, Street Paddler returned in September!

Falmouth CATS, again in conjunction with Elemental UK, ran a second Street Paddler scheme. 10 young people and one young peer mentor were invited to take part in this scheme run at Swanpool Beach in Falmouth.

The weather proved a bit challenging for the group, Elemental UK staff commented that participants “coped with everything nature could throw at them from big surf to freezing temperatures with enthusiasm and above all a big smile. It is a testament to their determination that despite the weather they completed the course and achieved their one star.”

Elemental staff also commented that “all participants came on so much throughout the project and achieved beyond our initial expectations.”

CATS UK staff were lucky enough to go along to one session and see the action. Although conditions were too rough for kayaking/canoeing the young people still had plenty of fun and learnt to work together as a group – encouraging each other and supporting one another. Falmouth CATS committee members supported the scheme throughout and stated that the positives of the scheme were “7 young people all achieving their BCU one star award, making new friends from outside of their own schools and a clear increase in confidence and self-belief in all.”

Falmouth CATS Street Paddler 2013

Falmouth CATS have now completed their 2013 Street Paddler scheme. This scheme was run in conjunction with Elemental UK and proved to be hugely successful and popular.

8 sessions were held at Swanpool Beach, Falmouth between 16th April – 31st May 2013. Seven young people completed the scheme and worked towards a BCU qualification.

CATS UK attended the final session held on 31.05.13 and saw first hand what an excellent scheme this was and how much the young people took from it.

Feedback from Falmouth CATS following the scheme has included the following: –

“All the Elemental staff who worked on the program felt it to be a huge success,
both in terms of hard skill development and the softer skills, communication,
team work etc.”

“All students seemed to develop a sense of ownership of the program and enjoyed
being made to feel part of a team. They were hugely supportive of each other
especially towards the end. The less water confident students all appeared to
have come on leaps and bounds and all progressed well in terms of specific kayak skills.”

“Two participants have chosen to complete their work experience with Elemental on the back of the course and have secured placements.”

” The three year eleven pupils took an active peer mentor role of their own accord. All of the year seven participants (Five of them) visibly grew in confidence as the program progressed.”

Street Paddler 2012

Falmouth CATS have now completed their first sports diversionary programme – Street Paddler.

Early feedback arriving from the Falmouth CATS Branch suggests that several of the youngsters invloved have gained positively from the experience, one of the young people who took part has significantly increased his confidence levels as a result of Street Paddler and has now gone on to join Falmouth Rugby Club.

Further feedback from participants has included the following comments: –

Participant X – He feels more confident on the water as he was actually taught real skills on how to paddle the kayak. He has made friends from it including those from another school which has improved his own social skills. He would like to go for a level 2 award as he enjoys OEd and will definitely take it as an option in GCSE PE.

Participant Y – He feels that he has improved his listening skills as he was having to listen to instructions carefully to know what to do in the kayak. He is hoping to do the next award and is thinking about doing O Ed as a career choice. He feels really aware of the safety aspects of working in the environment which will help him in later life. He wants to take Kayaking as an option sport in yr10 GCSE PE.
