OTHER NEWS –

So, what is Friday Night Splash & how did it start?

Friday Night Splash is a community programme developed by two 15 year old girls, Becky and Nikki. They saw a need to provide young people with activity on a Friday night to reduce or prevent anti-social behaviour related incidents occuring.

To establish the project required a huge amount of work, including taking surveys of local estates and residents for feedback and most difficult of all, lobbying local council and decision makers to get them on board.
All in all it took the girls 18 months to collect the evidence, present the findings at very high levels and create feasible business plans to negotiate with professional decision makers, because it was important that the project was not only sustainable, but the young people could have it at a price they could afford….the magic £1 (in 2014, it now costs £1.50 per session)

The impact on the young people and the community has been fantastic. Just look at what the young people would be doing if they were not at Friday night Splash….

75% would be bored, watching TV, MSN or facebooking friends (not real social interaction is it?!)
25% would be in town and drinking and then getting into some sort of trouble – remember these youngsters are all under 18.

Of all the girls surveyed at Friday Night Splash, for 75% of them, coming swimming was the ONLY other sport or physical activity they did outside of school PE lessons!!!

And was it popular? The first night saw 83 young people attend and the numbers built up from there. We saw dips during school holidays, but in the second half of the 6 months trial numbers reached an incredible 210 particpants! The average attendance per week is about 150 young people.

Why was it popular? Because it is a project run by young people, for young people!

The girls also engaged other young people for form a youth committee and created communications with the attendees by producing news letters. Click here for the newsletter they sent out. NEWSLETTER.pdf

Friday Night Splash – it was worth it!

The impact has been amazing with an average of 150 young people attending every week!

Friday Night Splash allows the young people to swim with their friends ; chill out in the cafe; break dance in the community room. And it is all run by young people, for young people!

We would like to thank Cornwall Community Foundation for funding the project from Sep 2010- May 2011.

And thanks for the BEST YOUTH PROJECT 2010 presented by Camilla Parker Bowles at Truro cathedral!
